Saqib Butt

Saqib Mohammad Butt is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice navigates the interstices of memory, political geography, and embodiment. Born in Srinagar, Kashmir, and currently based in New Delhi, he holds a Master’s degree in Applied Art and a PhD in Visual Arts, and teaches in the Department of Painting at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Working across durational performance, installation, found-object interventions, printmaking, and digital media, Butt constructs a poetics of resistance grounded in material inquiry and spatial intervention, engaging forms of disruption, withholding, and fragmentation to question how meaning and authority are produced. Central to his practice is counter-memorialisation, which resists permanence, singular narratives, and institutional fixation of memory, unsettling the conditions through which erasure and monumental certainty are produced. His work has been exhibited at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Lalit Kala Akademi, and AIFACS, and in 2023 he was awarded the Journalist Fund Europe Grant.
